When we are children, we are allowed to express ourselves when we feel pain, but as we grow up, we are expected to disregard it as much as we can! We are led to believe that pain somehow lessens us.
The way that pain is treated in television and movies adds to this altered perception. You may see a movie about a horrible alcoholic with health issues, and they are portrayed as a total loser!
Yet pain is an integral part of the body/mind connection. It can become an interface of such misery and despair that it can turn into a kind of black hole which can destroy your whole personality and devour the quality of your life in the process. Boy, is that a true and scary statement.
When I have suffered in the past from that amount of pain, plus depression, anxiety, panic attacks, constant insomnia, you are ready for that dragon to just come your way and swallow you up whole.
There is growing scientific evidence that prolonged pain is an aggressive, physically destructive disease, in and of itself. It's about time. With chronic pain, harmful biochemical changes take place in the body that can even interfere with gene expression.
We know that in fibromyalgia there are deficiencies in the abilities to modulate pain. This means that many of the ways a healthy body has to moderate pain signals are not available. It is persistent and relentless. This does not even take into account the emotional and mental aspect of such a physical attack.
I was there, and now I am here.
There is hope in the fog.
